Unifying Man and Situation: The Proposal of a Dynamic Authenticity Model

Abstract:

By integrating the traditional idea of ‘unity of man and universe’ with the theory of dynamic personality, the current study aimed to explore the nature of self-authenticity and to reveal the connection between trait authenticity and state authenticity. The dynamic model viewed authenticity as a state of harmony among cognition, emotion, and motivation experienced by individuals in an atmosphere of harmony between human beings and the situation. At the same time, trait authenticity was differentiated into optimal authenticity, rigid authenticity, and distorted authenticity, and only optimal authenticity was proposed to be conducive to the enhancement of individuals’ health and well-being. By offering authenticity a new experiential definition and dialectically integrating trait authenticity and state authenticity, the new model will promote future authenticity research to develop and progress in a more flexible, dynamic, and balanced direction.
