Abstract:

Aiming at the fact-checking behavior of ambiguous information in the new media environment, this paper studies the effect of social presence, vigilance and information involvement on the frequency of fact checking. A three-factor mixed designed experiment was used. The participants completed the fact-check task under different vigilance and social presence conditions, while the study measured the judgment of the given statements and the confidence level of the participants. The results show that social presence reduces the possibility of individual fact-checking, and the inducement of momentary vigilance weakens the impact of social presence. Individuals have less fact-checking possibility on information with high involvement than those with low involvement. The research results expand the information fact checking theory in the new media environment and provide reference for the design of information push.

Key words: fact-checking, social presence, vigilance, information involvement
