Abstract:

Appearance-focused comment interactions on social media are prone to triggering body image concerns among women. Consequently, focusing on short-form video platforms, this study investigated the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of broad conceptualization of beauty (BCB) comments as an intervention strategy. A total of 216 women were randomly assigned to three groups, viewing the same set of idealized body image short videos accompanied by different types of comments (positive appearance, positive appearance plus BCB, and neutral). The results indicated that, compared to the neutral group, exposure to positive appearance comments alone significantly decreased body satisfaction and exacerbated negative mood. However, appending BCB comments to positive appearance comments effectively buffered this negative effect. Furthermore, state appearance comparison did not mediate this relationship. These findings confirm that BCB comments can serve as an immediate psychological buffering strategy, thereby expanding new pathways for digital interventions regarding body image.
