The Impact of Advice Distance and Advisor’s Emotional Expression on Advice Taking

Abstract:

Based on the emotions as social information theory, using Judge–Advisor System (JAS) paradigm and distance estimation task, we investigated how decision makers evaluated the different distant advice that different emotional expressional advisors provided by two experiments. The Experiment 1 found that there was an inversely U–shaped relationship between advice distance and advice taking, however, in Experiment 2, when facing happy expressional advisor, an inversely U–shaped pattern of advice distance and advice taking. When facing angry expressional advisor, there was a monotone negative relation of advice distance and advice taking. Thus, our findings suggest that advisor’s emotional expression could change the pattern of advice distance and advice taking.
