Abstract: Aesthetic activity is an important part of human social life and art experience plays a vital role in personal development. Through the survey of 280 students of art colleges and nonart colleges, we examined the relationship between art experience and the ability of empathy, and the mediating role of aesthetic desire. The results suggested that: (1) Art experience was positively correlated with empathy and the students who had more art experience scored higher on empathy. (2) Aesthetic desire served to partially mediate the association between art experience and empathy. The subjects who had higher scores on art experience also had higher scores on aesthetic desire, and individuals with higher aesthetic desire had better ability of empathy. (3) Aesthetic desire of art college students was significantly higher than that of nonart college students. This study confirms the relationship between art experience and empathy, explores the potential probability to enhance the capacity of empathy through aesthetic activities, and highlights the value of the aesthetic activities,
