The Relationship between Disgust Emotion and Obsessive-Compulsive Tendencies:the Enlightenment to Clinical Application

Abstract: Disgust emotion is closely related to obsessive-compulsive tendencies. In order to explore whether Imagery Communication Psychotherapy has an effect on reducing the compulsive symptoms by using it to intervene in the disgust emotion, study one selected 305 students from a university in Beijing. The Chinese Disgust Scale was used for measuring disgust emotion while the Padua Inventory for measuring obsessive-compulsive symptom to discuss the relation between them.Study two used Imagery Communication Psychotherapy to intervene in the disgust emotion of 15 high obsessive-compulsive tendencies individuals. The results show that disgust emotion has positive relation to the obsessive-compulsive symptoms, especially tocontamination/washing symptoms. Disgust emotion possiblycould be a breakthrough point in the treatment of high obsessive-compulsive tendencies individuals, especially thecontamination/washing symptoms. Imagery Communication Psychotherapy is effective to reduce high obsessive-compulsive individuals symptoms by intervening their disgust emotion.
