Abstract: To facilitate understanding of the function of selfesteem among Chinese individuals, we introduce Identity Modulation Theory and the distinction between Smallego and Largeego, which emphasize uniqueness from others and similarity with others, respectively. Uniqueness and similarity are thought to be valued by all human beings, who then might stake their selfesteem on succeeding in domains that they highly value. Identity modulation theory suggests that selfesteem is a function of finding harmony between these two competing values of uniqueness and similarity. In contrast to previous selfesteem theories that particularly focus on individual, relational, or collective self, Identity Modulation Theory endeavors to integrate these three facets to offer an integral view of an individuals selfevaluation. The new indigenous theory concerning selfesteem will contribute to understanding meaning and function of Chinese selfesteem and finding ways to promote Chinese selfesteem.
