Social Network Sites Support and Addiction Among College Students: A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms between social network sites support and addiction. A sample of 501 Chinese college students was recruited in this study to complete fear of missing out scale, sensation seeking scale, social network sites support scale, and social network sites addiction scale. The results showed that: (1) Social network sites support had a significant positive predictive effect on Social network sites addiction among college students. (2) Fear of missing out mediated the effect of social network sites support on addiction. (3) Sensation seeking moderated the effect of social network sites support on addiction. The effect of social network sites support on addiction was more significant in college students with high sensation seeking. Conclusion: The effect of social network sites support on addiction is mediated by fear of missing out and moderated by sensation seeking.
