The Relationship between Subjective Social Class and Redistribution preference: The Moderating Effect of Mental Accounting

Abstract:

Researches under Western culture had initially demonstrated the relationship between social class and redistribution preference, charitable giving and other related behaviors. However, China culture has its own unique understanding of righteousness and interests. The relationship between social class and redistribution preference and its potential mechanisms should be explored by empirical research. Through three studies, this paper examines the influence of subjective social class and mental account on redistribution preference. Based on statistical analysis in the CGSS2017, Study 1 initially found that subjective social class negatively predicted redistribution intentions; Study 2 repeatedly verified the result via questionnaire survey Research; Study 3, by manipulating subjective social class and mental accounting through a remote association test, demonstrated that subjective social class negatively predicted redistribution preference and mental accounting moderated the relationship between them. The results of this study are important for understanding social redistribution and its potential mental mechanisms.
