Abstract: Sexual objectification is the experience of being treated as a body (or collection of body parts) valued predominantly for its use to (or consumption by) others. The internalization of an observers perspective on the physical self is called selfobjectification. Present studies have paid much attention to the negative results of selfobjectification on womens health and wellbeing. However, few studies have investigated the causes of selfobjectification in the aspect of culture. After reviewing the effects of culture on selfobjectification and comparing the crosscultural studies on selfobjectification, the hypothesized mechanisms have been discussed. Culture has influence on attitudes and behaviors of individuals through its effects on self, and different cultures have influences on selfobjectification through selfworth and selfconsciousness and have negative consequences on womens mental and physical health. Finally, this study attempts to provide another direction and method for future exploration on selfobjectification.

Key words: selfobjectification, selfworth, selfconsciousness, culture
