The Impact of Short Videos on the National Identity of College Students in Ethnic Areas

Abstract: As one thrive cultural phenomenon on the Internet, the short video is deeply embedded in college students daily life by its “short” and “small” symbolic. The short video is an important medium for college students to construct their national identity. It is also an important occasion for them to shape national, ethnic, and social identities. National identity is not instinctive, on the country, it is the result of the construction. Previous theoretical studies had claimed that national news reports were conducive to promote national identity. From an empirical point of view, this study adopts a single category implicit association test to explore the different kinds of national short videos make contribute to constructing college students national identity in ethnic minority areas. The results suggest that after watched short videos about national content, the D score of the test was significantly higher than 0, which indicated that watching short videos related to national content could significantly improve college students national identity. The D score of history and culture short video was significantly higher than those of the other three short video groups, which indicated that short videos relevant to history and culture can better promote individual national identity.
