The Effect of Teacher-Student Relationship on Left-Behind Children's School Adjustment: The Chain Mediating Role of Mental Health and School Engagement

Abstract: To explore the chain mediating effect of mental health and school engagement between teacherstudent relationship and school adjustment of leftbehind children. A total 370 leftbehind children from five primary schools in Jiangxi province were tested with the TeacherStudent Relationship Questionnaire, the Mental Health Test, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-student and the TeacherChild Rating Scale. The results demonstrated that: (1) Mental health mediated the effect of teacherstudent relationship on school adjustment of leftbehind children; (2) School engagement mediated the effect of mental health on school adjustment of leftbehind children. Therefore, mental health and school engagement played chain mediating effect between teacherstudent relationship and school adjustment. These findings supported the assumption model.
