Based on the biopsychosocial model, two experiments were conducted to explore the interactive effects of fat talk, gender, body mass index (BMI), and self-acceptance on college students' body image. The results of Experiment 1 showed that fat talk can cause more negative body image; Women had more negative body image than men, and fat talk had a greater negative impact on women; Individuals with a high BMI index had a more negative body image. The Experiment 2 found that, individuals with high self-acceptance had a more positive body image and were less negatively affected by fat talk. Thus, our findings suggest that the body image of college students is influenced by various external and internal factors such as fat talk, gender, BMI, self-acceptance and so on. The results provide evidence and support for guiding college students to establish a healthy lifestyle and develop positive body image.

    Psychology: Techniques and Application. 2024, 12 (2):  75-84.
    Abstract ( 91 )   PDF(pc) (1037KB) ( 347 )   Save

Written Emotional Disclosure (WED) is a research paradigm that helps people express their inner emotions through writing. Based on the WED paradigm, we designed a self-help emotion intervention program for college students, with a writing topic of positive psychological content to explore its effect on improving positive psychological qualities and alleviating mental health problems. Sixty-eight college students were randomly divided into the intervention group and wait-list control group, and then the intervention group received writing guidance and recorded the weekly theme once a week for three consecutive weeks. The results showed that the intervention improved college students' psychological resilience and subjective happiness scores, and significantly reduced depression scores. The anxiety score was not significantly reduced. The results indicate that the self-help program is effective in promoting positive psychological qualities and reducing mental health problems among college students.

    Psychology: Techniques and Application. 2024, 12 (2):  85-96.
    Abstract ( 122 )   PDF(pc) (1087KB) ( 448 )   Save

The growth mindset is a crucial factor influencing educational outcomes, and investigating its relationship with learning engagement and the underlying mechanisms holds practical significance in enhancing academic achievements among adolescents. Study 1 employed an experimental approach to conduct video interventions with 202 participants from junior high school. The findings revealed that participants in the growth mindset intervention group demonstrated significantly higher scores in learning engagement compared to the control group. In Study 2, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 838 vocational school students. Furthermore, Study 3 involved the analysis of sample data from 11,865 secondary school students in four provinces and cities in China, utilizing the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA 2018) dataset. Two studies found consistent results: (1) Growth mindset significantly positively predicted learning engagement. (2) Grit and life satisfaction played partial mediating roles between growth mindset and learning engagement. (3) Growth mindset also had an impact on learning engagement through the chain mediating effect of grit and life satisfaction. In conclusion, this study reveals the underlying psychological mechanisms of growth mindset and learning engagement, and has some implications for the students' learning engagement.

The Variation in National Suicide Rates: An Explanation Based on Culture-gene Coevolution of Collectivism and the 5-HTTLPR S Allele
CHEN Hao, DU Meihan, ZHANG Shuo, YANG Li
    Psychology: Techniques and Application. 2024, 12 (2):  97-103.
    Abstract ( 69 )   PDF(pc) (980KB) ( 254 )   Save

To explain the global distribution of suicide rates, this study is based on publicly available data from authoritative sources such as the World Health Organization. It proposes and tests a conceptual model that incorporates the co-evolution of collectivist culture and the 5-HTTLPR S allele as explanatory factors. The analysis reveals that collectivist culture and the prevalence of depressive disorders serve as sequential mediators between the population proportion of individuals carrying the 5-HTTLPR S allele and suicide rates. The hypothesis of co-evolution between collectivist culture and 5-HTTLPR S allele has gained preliminary support, that is, collectivist culture may buffer the negative impact of carrying 5-HTTLPR S allele on individuals and groups, reducing regional prevalence of depressive disorders and suicide rates.

Addition versus Subtraction: The Strategies Individuals Utilized in the Pursuit of Happiness and Their Relationship with Subjective Well-being
    CAO Xin, WANG Xiuxin
    Psychology: Techniques and Application. 2024, 12 (2):  104-114.
    Abstract ( 85 )   PDF(pc) (1143KB) ( 307 )   Save

This paper presents three studies that examine the propensity of individuals to employ either addition or subtraction strategies in their pursuit of happiness, and the correlation between these strategic preferences and subjective well-being. The first study used interview methods to initially explore the strategic preferences individuals utilize in their pursuit of happiness. The third study utilized a questionnaire, developed in the second study, to delve deeper into these strategic preferences and their correlation with subjective well-being. The results indicated that individuals tended to employ addition strategies in their pursuit of happiness. The use of addition strategies was positively correlated with subjective well-being, whereas the use of subtraction strategies did not significantly predict subjective well-being. The propensity to use addition strategies was positively associated with positive emotions and life satisfaction, and negatively correlated with negative emotions. Interestingly, the use of subtraction strategies was found to positively predict positive emotions, life satisfaction, and negative emotions. The differential predictive power of addition and subtraction strategies on subjective well-being is most evident in their impact on negative emotions.

    Abstract ( 94 )   PDF(pc) (1749KB) ( 292 )   Save

The drive to enhance the external validity and convenience of psychology experiments has prompted the transition of psychology research to the online platform. Online psychology experiments offer rapid data acquisition, high authenticity, and large sample sizes. However, most available tools are web-based, with a significant absence of mobile-based experimental tools. Therefore, the present study created an internet-based experimental tool utilizing the WeChat Mini Program and evaluated its reliability through cognitive control experiments based on the flanker paradigm and its variants. The study findings showed that the WeChat Mini Program successfully replicated all three cognitive control components, demonstrating the classical flanker effect. There are differences between the performance of iPhones and Android phones and between low-configuration phones and mid- and high-configuration phones. The relationships between the cognitive control components agreed with the theoretical consensus. In conclusion, the WeChat Mini Program exhibits reliable performance as an online experimental tool for psychology. However, it is essential to consider the effects of device type and configuration.
