Abstract:

Based on the biopsychosocial model, two experiments were conducted to explore the interactive effects of fat talk, gender, body mass index (BMI), and self-acceptance on college students' body image. The results of Experiment 1 showed that fat talk can cause more negative body image; Women had more negative body image than men, and fat talk had a greater negative impact on women; Individuals with a high BMI index had a more negative body image. The Experiment 2 found that, individuals with high self-acceptance had a more positive body image and were less negatively affected by fat talk. Thus, our findings suggest that the body image of college students is influenced by various external and internal factors such as fat talk, gender, BMI, self-acceptance and so on. The results provide evidence and support for guiding college students to establish a healthy lifestyle and develop positive body image.

Key words: fat talk, body image, gender, body mass index (BMI), self-acceptance
