The Influence of Social and Psychological Factors on Postpartum Depression: from Perspective of Cognitive Behavioral Model of Postpartum Depression

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) among females and effects of perinatal experience, mental resources, social resources and mental vulnerability on PPD. 438 women from Tianjin within 4-24 weeks after delivery were recruited to participate in this study. Participants were asked to complete a self-designed perinatal information questionnaire, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Vulnerable Personality Style Questionnaire (VPSQ) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). The prediction model of social-psychological factors of PPD was developed using hierarchical logistic regression. Results of the study indicate that (1) The detection rate of PPD symptoms is 26.03% in Tianjin. (2) Data indicate that good relationship with parents-in-law and perceived social support are protective factors for PPD, while personality vulnerability and maladaptive cognitive coping strategies were risk factors for PPD.
