This study used an experimental method to explore the effects of type, intensity and processing method of facial expression on emotional understanding of children with autism. Twenty autistic children participated in the formal experiment. The results showed: (1) There were differences in the recognition of different facial expressions in children with autism. (2) The correct recognition rate of overall facial expressions of autistic children was significantly better than the correct recognition rate of partial facial expressions. (3) The correct recognition rate of high-intensity facial expressions of autistic children was significantly better than that of low-intensity facial expressions. (4) The facial expression processing method and expression intensity of children with autism had an interactive influence. In the overall processing mode, the correct rate of expression recognition at 100% strength was significantly higher than that at 50% strength. In the partial processing mode, the correct rate of expression recognition at 100% strength and the correct rate at 50% strength were not significantly different.
