The Impact of Bullying Victimization on Externalizing Problems among Junior High School Students: A Short-term Follow-up Study

Abstract:

Based on the assumption of violence cycle and general stress theory, this study explores the longitudinal impact and mechanism of bullying victimization on externalizing problems among middle school students. A survey was conducted on 962 junior high school students in Hebei Province using the Delaware Bullying Victim Scale Student Questionnaire (DBVS-S), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Student Questionnaire (SDQ-S), Adolescent Emotional Regulation Scale, and Children and Adolescents Peer Relationship Scale, with an interval of six months (the number of valid questionnaires was 920 and 858 respectively). The results showed that early experiences of bullying victimization among junior high school students not only directly affect later externalizing problems, but also indirectly affect later externalizing problems through the vertical mediating effect of peer relationships, as well as the vertical chain mediating effect of expression inhibition and peer relationships. This study reveals the mechanism of the externalization of bullying victimization, which has a certain significance for reducing the externalization of junior high school students.
