Relations Between Grandparenting Styles and Middle School Students School Engagement: The Mediating Roles of Materialism and Behavioral Self-Regulation

Abstract: Numerous studies have examined the effects of parenting styles on adolescent development, yet little is known about the roles of grandparenting styles on adolescent developmental outcomes. We explored the effects of grandparenting styles on middle school students school engagement, as well as the mediating roles of materialism and behavioral self-regulation. Questionnaires were administered to 352 middle school students in Beijing. The results showed that: After controlling for parenting styles, grandparenting styles still had unique effects on adolescents school engagement, and materialism and behavioral self-regulation significantly mediated these effects. Specifically, (1) grandparents warmth and support negatively predicted middle school students materialism, whereas grandparents permissiveness positively predicted these students materialism, which further negatively predicted their school engagement; (2) grandparents warmth and support positively predicted middle school students behavioral self-regulation, whereas verbal hostility and permissiveness negatively predicted their behavioral self-regulation, which further resulted in higher degree of school engagement.
