The Relationship Between Intrinsic Life Goals and Subjective Well-being of Middle School Students: The Mediating Role of Basic Psychological Needs

Abstract: In order to explore the relationship between the intrinsic life goals, basic psychological needs and subjective wellbeing of middle school students, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 885 middle school students using the Intrinsic Life Goals Scale, Basic Psychological Needs Scale and Subjective Well-being Scale. The results showed that: (1) The scores of basic psychological needs of boys were significantly higher than those of girls; the scores of basic psychological needs and subjective wellbeing of only children were significantly higher than those of non-only children; (2) The intrinsic life goals, basic psychological needs and subjective wellbeing of middle school students were both corvelated significantly and positively; (3) The intrinsic life goals of middle school students had a significant predictive effect on basic psychological needs; the basic psychological needs had a significant predictive effect on subjective wellbeing; (4) Basic psychological needs played a mediating role between the intrinsic life goals and subjective wellbeing of middle school students.
