Identifying Psychological Characteristics of British Population in Early 20th Century from Maugham's Novels

Abstract: Due to the industrial revolution, British came into across rapid economy development and society change in early 20th century, which can be considered as a microcosm of western countries. It is thus very critical to identify the psychological characteristics of British population, which may help us further understand the psychosocial characteristics of western society during that period. In this paper, we propose to predict big-five personality and life satisfaction of the characters in Maugham's novels by using machine learning models. We found that there was no significant difference between male and female in personality and life satisfaction. The novel characters were identified with high openness and low extraversion, while their life satisfaction were a bit higher than middle. The psychological characteristics of British population might be because of the adaptation of economic development, social change and family role in early 20th century.
