Abstract:

People can anticipate the behaviors of unknown individuals based on group information. In order to investigate the influence of the prevalence of group members’ behaviors on expecting others’ behaviors in a situation where there was a conflict between achieving the efficiency of individual goals and conforming to group members’ behaviors, and the role of norm perception in such kind of situation, the study used textual materials to simulate the situation. Two experiments were conducted among 208 college students and 166 public individuals. The results found that: (1) In a situation where there was a conflict between achieving the efficiency of individual goals and conforming to group members’ behaviors, the prevalence of group members’ behaviors positively predicted behavior expectation, and the norm perception played a mediating role in such kind of situation; (2) Whether it was a tight group or a loose group, the higher the prevalence of a certain behavior in the group was, the stronger the norm perception of the behavior would be in the group, thus making it easier to tend to anticipate that more people in the group would behave the same way. This study revealed the important role of people’s norm perception of group behaviors in anticipating group members’ behaviors.
