Abstract:

To explore the relationship between stress perception and adolescent problem smartphones use, and the roles of ruminant thinking and emotion regulation. A sample of 514 junior high school students was surveyed with Chinese version of the Stress Perception Scale, Ruminant Thinking Scale, Emotion Regulation Scale and Smartphone Addiction Scale. The results showed that: (1) Correlation analysis showed that stress perception, rumination thinking, emotion regulation (expression inhibition) and problematic smartphone use were positively corelated with each other. (2) The mediating effect of ruminant thinking and emotion regulation (expression inhibition) between stress perception and problematic smartphone use was statistically significant. (3) The chain mediating effect of ruminant thinking and emotion regulation (expression inhibition) was also significant. Conclusion: Stress perception can either positively predict problem smartphone use, or indirectly affect problem smartphone use through the chain mediation of ruminant thinking and emotion regulation (expression inhibition).

Key words: stress perception, problematic smartphone use, ruminant thinking, emotion regulation
