Study on the Relationship between Loneliness and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies among Migrant Workers

Abstract: This study investigated the characteristics of loneliness, eight kinds of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (acceptance, rumination, positive refocusing, positive planning and reappraisal, self-comfort, self-blame, other-blame, catastrophizing) and their relationship of migrant workers in Shenzhen city. Meanwhile, this study would be helpful to reveal mental condition and mental resilience mechanism of migrant workers. UCLA Loneliness Scale (The 3rd Edition) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire were applied on 93 migrant workers in Shenzhen city ranged 21～45 years old. The result suggested that most of migrant workers experienced loneliness. In addition, the strategies which they often use are adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Moreover, Loneliness was positively correlated with acceptance, rumination, catastrophizing, self-blame, other-blame; while loneliness was negatively correlated with positive planning and reappraisal. Besides, catastrophizing, positive planning and rumination could significantly predict loneliness.
