Abstract:

In order to explore the effect of moral self-perception on prosocial behavior, as well as the moderating role of situational openness in this process, the study employed a 2 (moral self-perception: moral priming group vs. unethical priming group) × 2 (situational openness: anonymous vs. public) between-subjects design. The manipulation of moral self-perception was achieved through a recall paradigm, and the prosocial behavior was measured using the Dictator Game. The results indicate that moral self-perception positively affects prosocial behavior, that is, the prosocial behavior of moral priming group is significantly higher than that of unethical priming group. Meanwhile, situational openness moderates the impact of moral self perception on prosocial behavior. Specifically, in anonymous situation, individuals who were primed with moral self-perception exhibited more prosocial behaviors compared to those who were primed with unethical self-perception. However, in public situation, there was no significant difference in prosocial behavior between the moral priming group and the unethical priming group.
