Socioeconomic Status and Mental Health in College Students:The Role of Consumption Guilt

Abstract: To examine the role of consumption guilt between socioeconomic status and mental health in college students, 560 college studentsdata of subjective and objective socioeconomic status, anticipatory and reactive consumption guilt, depression, anxiety, and subjective well-being were collected with self-reported questionnaires. Results showed that: (1) The objective socioeconomic status could influence depression and anxiety in college students through anticipatory consumption guilt, but it did not affect subjective well- being; (2) The objective socioeconomic status could in?uence depression, anxiety and well-being in college students through reactive consumption guilt. Overall, objective socioeconomic status causes an effect on college students' mental health via guilt feelings in consumption, and the e?ect varies with sub types of guilt feelings and mental health indicators.
