The Influence of Group Permeability and Status Legitimacy on Sense of Belonging:Mediating Role of Discrimination Perception

Abstract: This study, based on Social Identity Theory, is to explore how two of the sociostructural characteristics of intergroup relations (permeability, legitimacy) influence sense of belonging of Shanghai. In addition, this study further investigated the influence of discrimination perception as a mediator. All the participants in this study were randomly chosen from different universities in Shanghai. The experiment was conducted using different text materials to prime participants cognition of permeability and legitimacy, and following measured the sense of belonging of Shanghai and the discrimination perception. The results were shown as follows: The perception of permeability of group boundaries and the perception of legitimacy were both positively related with nonlocal university students sense of belonging of Shanghai. Discrimination perception both partly mediated the relationship between them.
