Emotional Complexity and Wise Reasoning: The Mediating Role of Emotional Regulation Strategies and Self-forgiveness

Abstract:  In order to explore the relationship between emotional complexity and wise reasoning, as well as the mediating role of emotional regulation strategies and self-forgiveness, a total of 1298 college students were investigated using the emotional experience range and discriminative scale, the emotional regulation questionnaire, the self-forgiveness subscale and the situational wise reasoning scale. The results showed that: (1) emotional complexity positively predicted wise reasoning; (2) cognitive reappraisal and self-forgiveness partially mediated the relationship between emotional complexity and wise reasoning, while the mediating role of expressive suppression was not significant. Cognitive reappraisal and self-forgiveness, as well as expressive suppression and self-forgiveness played a chain mediating role between emotional complexity and wise reasoning. These results suggested that emotional complexity can directly affect wise reasoning and indirectly through the mediating role of cognitive reappraisal and self-forgiveness, as well as through the chain mediating role of cognitive reappraisal and self-forgiveness, expressive suppression and self-forgiveness.
