The Role of Drinking Refusal Self-efficacy and Self-Concept Clarity

Abstract: The present study aimed to investigate the latent profiles of drinking motives and whether drinking refusal self-efficacy and self-concept clarity can predict drinking motives. To this end, 561 Chinese college students were administered a battery of self-report scales, including the drinking motive questionnaire, the drinking refusal self-efficacy questionnaire and the self-concept clarity scale. Latent profile analyses suggested three unique profiles of drinking motives: social drinking motives (25.38%), weak-drinking motives (62.61%) and strong-drinking motives (12.01%). Logistic regression analyses showed that the subtypes of drinking motives were related to drinking refusal self-efficacy, self-concept clarity, gender and family incomes. Overall, this study demonstrates that drinking motives among college students are heterogeneous. In addition, it suggests that drinking refusal self-efficacy and self-concept clarity may be key aspects of alcohol use intervention programs for college students.
