To investigate the relationship between volunteering and cognitive function among older adults and its mechanisms, the mediating roles of attitudes towards aging and depressive symptoms were examined using the Volunteering Questionnaire, the Simpli?ed Brief Mental Status Scale, the Attitudes Towards Aging Questionnaire, and the Epidemiologic Depression Survey Scale. The study found that: (1) volunteering, formal and informal volunteering significantly and positively predicted cognitive function; (2) attitudes towards aging partially mediated the relationship between formal volunteering and cognitive function; and(3) depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between informal volunteering and cognitive function. The findings have important implications for delaying and improving cognitive function in older adults.
