The Influence of Social Class on Pro-environmental Behavior:The Mediating Role of Materialistic Values

Abstract: The research is aim to explore the influence of subjective social class on the pro-environment behavior and its action path through two experiments respectively. The results show that : (1) subjective social class has a significant positive effect on pro-environmental behavior. Individuals with high subjective social class perception are more willing to protect the environment and contribute money to environmental activities. (2) materialistic values play a completely mediating role between social class and pro-environment behaviors. Individuals of high social class have lower materialistic and more pro-environment, while individuals of low social class work in  opposite ways. These results can provide some references for promoting individuals to improve their tendency of environmental protection behavior and reducing environmental problems
