The Relationship Between Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Creativity Tendencies: A longitudinal Study among College Freshmen

Abstract:

A total of 408 college freshmen were recruited to investigate the relationship between creativity tendencies and three factors, i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress, at two–time points over two months with a cross–lagged model. This study revealed: (1) The risk and imagination scores of creativity tendencies significantly decreased over time, but there was no significant change in the challenge and curiosity dimensions of creativity tendencies, depression, anxiety, and stress scores; (2) While the depression significantly and positively predicted imagination, it negatively predicted curiosity and challenge; (3) The depression and risk mutually influenced each other; (4) The regression coefficients of anxiety, stress, and creativity did not reach statistical standards. There are two key takeaways. Firstly, this study contributes to the creativity literature by showing that creativity tendencies lead to depression. Secondly, future research should examine the interplay between creativity tendencies, anxiety, and stress．
