Family Socioeconomic Status and Adolescent Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Role of Interparental Conflict and the Moderating Role of Growth Mindset

Abstract:

Based on the family stress model, we explored the role of interparental conflict and growth mindset in the association between family socioeconomic status and adolescent life satisfaction. A total of 1869 middle school students participated in this study. The results showed that: (1) Interparental conflict mediated the relationship between family socioeconomic status and adolescent life satisfaction; and (2) The mediating effect of interparental conflict was moderated by a growth mindset. In specific, a growth mindset was able to attenuate the negative effects of interparental conflict on life satisfaction, but the protective effect was limited. The findings support and extend the family stress model, and have implications for enhancing adolescent life satisfaction.
