Abstract: A metaanalysis was conducted to explore the relationship between materialism and subjective wellbeing in China. Twentyone relevant studies ,including 16 Chinese articles and 5 English articlespublished during 1998 to 2017 met the criteria of metaanalysis were taken into research. All studies included 22 independent samples with a total of 11712 participants. Results of metaanalysis showed that materialism has a negative correlation with subjective wellbeing (r=-0.20, p<0.001), life satisfaction(r=-0.19, p<0.001)and positive emotions (r=-0.10, p<0.01)significantly, and it had a positive correlation with negative emotion (r=0.20, p<0.001). Moderator analysis revealed that the relationship between materialism and subjective wellbeing was regulated by the publication time, gender differences and type of participants (e.g. publication time could negatively adjust this relationship), while the moderating effects of research approach of subjective wellbeing and the type of publicationwere not significant.

Key words: materialism, subjective wellbeing, metaanalysis, moderating effect
