Abstract: The current research explored the relationship between use of violent media and empathy from middle childhood to emerging adulthood via meta-analysis. Through a literature search, 24 articles and 37 datasets involving 20081 participants were selected. Results showed that use of violent media was negatively associated with empathy in general as well as its emotional and cognitive components. Plus, there was a stronger association with emotional empathy than with cognitive empathy. Besides, participants age and use of smart media were found to moderate the association with empathy.
