Abstract: Nowadays, with rapid development of Chinese economy, materialism is widely concerned among studies. To explore the moderator effect of awe on the relationship between materialism and loneliness, this study investigated 378 participants with the Material Values Scale (MVS), the UCLA Loneliness Scale and Awe Subscale of Dispositional Positive Emotion Scales (DPES). The moderate model was tested by the PROCESS program and the simple slope was tested by Johnson-Neymans method. The results indicated that: (1)Materialism positively predicted loneliness; (2)Awe moderated the positive relationship between materialism and loneliness, buffering the increase of loneliness as the increase of materialism; (3) There was a significant moderation effect of awe on the relationship between valuing possessions as a happiness medicine, a subtype of materialism and loneliness, which means that awe specifically at high level can reverse the effect of the materialistic subtype (happiness) on loneliness. The result suggests that awe can be used to break the vicious cycle of materialism and loneliness.
Key words: loneliness, materialism, awe, moderation, coping with loneliness
