Abstract: The concreteness effect of word processing refers to the reaction of concrete words in language processing faster than abstract words, and the opposite of that is the abstractness effect of word processing. The current study focused on the effect of affective context of sentences on concrete and abstract word processing under controlling the valence of words. Participants were required to complete the learningrecognition task. The results showed that the processing of concrete words was faster than that of abstract words in the neutral context, namely, there was concreteness effect. However, the concreteness effect disappeared in the emotional contexts (positive and negative), no significant differences existed in the reaction time between abstract words and concrete words. And the reaction time of abstract words was shorter in emotional contexts than that in neutral context. The results indicated that the emotional context could promote the processing of abstract words, supporting the triplecomponent hypothesis of word processing, and the effect of emotion on abstract words was extended from the word itself to the sentence context.

Key words: triplecomponent hypothesis; emotional context; concreteness effect; abstractness effect
