As One Falls Another Rises:Changes of Positive-Negative Emotions in the Extended Contact Effect

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to explore the specific ways of emotions in the relationship between extended contact and social distance. Experiment 1 found that extended contact increasepositive emotions and reduce negative emotions of ingroup towards outgroup significantly, positive and negative emotions play significant mediating roles in the extended contact effect. Furthermore, Experiment 2 found that when the content of helping others was added into the extended contact materials, the admiration emotion increased while the disgust emotion reduced significantly, admiration and disgust play a significant mediating roles in the extended contact effect.
