The Effect of Extended Contact on Intergroup Attitude: The Mediating Role of Selfclosure

Abstract: Basing on the extended contact hypothesis and its research, 181 Uyghur college students were selected to investigate the effect of two different valence of contact, that is, positive and negative extended contact, on intergroup attitude, and whether selfclosure served as a mediator. The results showed that positive extended contact occurred more frequently than negative extended contact and they were weakly correlated with each other. Furthermore, selfclosure mediated the relationship between positive and negative extended contact and intergroup attitude. Selfclosure was an important factor that could explain extended contact effect and attention shall be paid to increasing the frequency of positive extended contact as well as reducing the frequency of negative extended contact.
