The Mediating Effect of Prosocial Behaviors and Basic Psychological Needs on the Relationship Between Eudaimonia Orientation and Happiness

Abstract: To explore the multiple mediating effect of prosocial behaviors and basic psychological needs between eudaimonia orientation and happiness. A total 665 college students from Shandong Province were tested with the Orientations to Happiness Scale, the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale, the Prosocial Behavior Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Scale and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. The results demonstrated that: (1) Prosocial behaviors and basic psychological needs mediated the effect of eudaimonia orientation on happiness; (2) Prosocial behaviors and basic psychological needs play a parallel mediating effect between eudaimonia orientation and happiness. Therefore, eudaimonic orientation has a direct impact on happiness and also has an indirect impact on happiness through basic psychological needs and prosocial behaviors.
