Abstract:

Judgments of Learning is a predictive estimation of individual confidence in recent learning content in future tests. It is a commonly used method to evaluate individual metacognitive ability in memory research. However, judgments of learning may change the memory performance, positively or negatively, which can be called as reactivity of judgment of learning. Prior studies showed little consensus on the existing and direction of the effect. We conducted a meta-analysis to explore the effect of judgment of learning on memory performance. The results indicated that judgment of learning have a positive effect on memory performance (Hedges’g=0.22). Sub-group analysis revealed that the reactivity of judgment of learning was moderated by types of stimuli and learning times. In addition, there was no moderate effect on test types. This result indicated individual’s memory will be of beneficial to making judgment of learning.
