Emotion Cognition Intervention Effects in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-analysis

Abstract: This study aimed to examine intervention effects of emotion recognition in children with autism spectrum disorder and to support solid evidence for special education teachers. literature searched and yielded 22 data from randomized controlled trials, involving 817 children with autism spectrum disorder. Additionally, some potential moderating variables (the intervention methods, the length of the intervention period, the intensity of intervention, and parents involvement, etc.) were mainly analyzed. The findings suggested that (1) the effect sizes for emotion recognition achieved d=069. (2) the intervention effects moderated significantly by the intervention methods, and the effect sizes of technologyassisted intervention (d=090) were larger than that of nontechnologyassisted intervention (d=037). However, intervention environment, family participation, regions, intervention duration, and intervention frequency variables have no moderating effect. These results indicated that technologyassisted intervention can improve significantly the capacity of emotion recognition in children with autism spectrum disorder.
