The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Trust in Government: A Cross-Lagged Analysis

Abstract:

To explore the interactive relationship between socioeconomic status and trust in government. A cross lagged analysis was conducted on socioeconomic status and trust in government of 10790 residents in the China Family Panel Studies database from 2012 (T1) to 2020 (T5). Result showed that there was a significant positive correlation between socioeconomic status and trust in government measured five times; Socioeconomic status at T1 to T5 were positively correlated, and trust in government at T1 to T5 were positively correlated; There are interdependent relationships between socioeconomic status and trust in government. The results revealed that there is a bidirectional relationship between socioeconomic status and trust in government, which is mutually predictive and causal.
