Abstract: This research aimed to explore the effect of subjective socioeconomic status on depression, and the mediating role of selfesteem. A selfreported questionnaire survey using an 8-item subjective socioeconomic status questionnaire, selfesteem scale and depression scale was conducted to collect 319 freshmens data. The results indicated that (1) Subjective socioeconomic status was significantly positively correlated to selfesteem, subjective socioeconomic status was significantly negatively correlated to depression; (2) Both subjective socioeconomic status and selfesteem can significantly negatively predict the level of depression; (3) Subjective socioeconomic status can predict the level of depression through selfesteem, and selfesteem partly mediated the relationship between subjective socioeconomic status and depression. Therefore, improving freshmens subjective socioeconomic status and selfesteem has a positive effect on depression among freshmen.
