Abstract: This research aimed to explore the effect of subjective socioeconomic status on depression, and the mediating role of selfesteem. A selfreported questionnaire survey using an 8-item subjective socioeconomic status questionnaire, selfesteem scale and depression scale was conducted to collect 319 freshmens data. The results indicated that (1) Subjective socioeconomic status was significantly positively correlated to selfesteem, subjective socioeconomic status was significantly negatively correlated to depression; (2) Both subjective socioeconomic status and selfesteem can significantly negatively predict the level of depression; (3) Subjective socioeconomic status can predict the level of depression through selfesteem, and selfesteem partly mediated the relationship between subjective socioeconomic status and depression. Therefore, improving freshmens subjective socioeconomic status and selfesteem has a positive effect on depression among freshmen.
