The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Aggressive Behavior among College Students: The Mediating Effect of Sense of Control

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the relationships among socioeconomic status, sense of control and aggressive behavior of college students. 320 college students were surveyed using the MacArthur scale of subjective socioeconomic status, the questionnaire of objective socioeconomic status, the sense of control scale and the aggression questionnaire. Results indicated that the subjective socioeconomic status and objective socioeconomic status were both positively related to sense of control. Subjective socioeconomic status was negatively related to aggressive behavior, whereas objective socioeconomic status had no such significant relationship with aggressive behavior; Sense of control was negatively related to aggressive behavior. In addition, sense of control had a mediating effect in the relationship between subjective socioeconomic status and aggressive behavior, and a suppressing effect in the relationship between objective socioeconomic status and aggressive behavior.
