Interpersonal Familiarity Affect the Trust Level: The Effect of Context

Abstract: Based on the trust game model, the present research sets cooperation task situation and competition task situation, and attempts to explore the difference between acquaintance and stranger in the matter of trust level while individuals in different task context make interpersonal trust judgment.Participants were randomly assigned to one of four versions of the survey from a 2×2 design.We used two different task conditions(cooperation, competition) and two interpersonal familiarities(familiar, unfamiliar).Results reveal that in both task situation, subjects have a lower trust level to strangers. There is an interaction between the interpersonal familiarity and the task situation.The simple effect test showed that, in the cooperation condition the trust level of the acquaintance is higher than strangers,and the difference was significant. While in the competitive situation, there was no significant difference between strangers and acquaintance.
