Abstract: Based on different self-concepts, self-esteem can be distinguished as personal self-esteem, relational self-esteem and collective self-esteem. Previous studies have mainly focused on personal self-esteem and collective self-esteem; however, in recent years, relational self-esteem has emerged as a research line. Relational self-esteem refers to a sense of self-worth that one can derive from his/her relationships with important others (family and friends) and its concept and mechanisms are different from personal and collective self-esteem. The scholars mainly focus on three lines of research on relational self-esteem: the development of the concept, the measurement, and the theoretical implications. On the basis of theoretical supposition and empirical evidence on relational self-esteem, we propose in the future, the researchers need to pay more attention to three research directions, including development process of relational self-esteem, cultural differences between east and west in relational self-esteem, and the relative important roles of family and friends in relational self-esteem.

Key words: relational self-esteem, personal self-esteem, collective self-esteem, psychological well-being, terror management
