Abstract: The present study explores the mediating role of body image on the relationship between mindfulness (state and trait) and restricted eating behavior. Based on a six-day questionnaire survey of 65 female restrictive eaters, the effects of state and trait mindfulness on body image and restrictive eating behavior are analyzed at the within-person and between-person levels. The results show that: (1) state and trait mindfulness are significantly positively correlated with body image, whereas they have a significantly negative correlation with restrained eating behavior. (2) state and trait mindfulness can significantly negatively predict restrained eating behavior. (3) body image can be a full mediator on the relationship between state mindfulness and restrained eating behavior in within-person level. These results show that the restrained eaters with a higher level of daily mindfulness can be more satisfied with their bodies, so have fewer restrained eating behaviors.

Key words: restrained eating behavior, mindfulness, body image
