Retrieval Practice Potentiates the Learning and Memory of New Information: The Forward Testing Effect

Abstract:

The forward testing effect refers to testing of previously studied information potentiates subsequent learning of new information. Through analyzing the previous studies, we review the paradigms, empirical evidence and mechanisms underlying this effect in this study. We also propose some important directions for future research to explore, such as further investigation of the neural mechanisms underlying the forward testing effect, focusing on the role of test in procedural knowledge, comparing the effectiveness of testing with other learning strategies, and exploring the boundary conditions of the transfer of forward testing effect.
