The Determiners of Environmental Sounds Naming

Abstract:

In the present study, we measured the H value (uncertainty of naming), concept agreement (naming accuracy), name agreement and naming latency for a set of 120 environmental sounds in Mandarin Chinese through an environmental sound naming experiment. We also provided normative data along multiple cognitive and affective variable dimensions for these sounds. These dimensions include familiarity, representativeness, confidence, arousal, pleasure and imaginability. Two key factors influencing the naming of environmental sounds were identified through factor analysis. The similarities and differences of environmental sounds were distinguished by K-means cluster analysis, and an effective classification model was established. The results of this study can provide valuable information for experiments from cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience studies using environmental sound as experimental materials.
