Abstract:

To explore the relationship between adolescents' parent-child attachment and the non-suicidal self-injury along with the intermediary role of self-esteem between them, a survey among 472 senior high school students was conducted using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSE) and Adolescents' Self-injury Questionnaire (ASQ). The results show: (1) Both Parent-child attachment and self-esteem predict non-suicidal self-injury significantly and negatively, while Parent-child attachment predicts self-esteem significantly and positively; (2) Self-esteem functions as complete intermediation between Parent-child attachment and non-suicidal self-injury. The conclusion suggests that Parent-child attachment levels affect adolescents’ self-injury behaviors with self-esteem as an intermediary agent.
